During construction efforts to create a new pedestrian piazza connecting Castel Sant’Angelo to St. Peter’s Basilica, two of Rome’s most frequented landmarks, a fascinating find emerged. According to an article published by the Associated Press , archaeologists have unearthed the remnants of an ancient garden near the Vatican, believed to have belonged to the infamous Roman Emperor Caligula.

Once home to imperial residences, the area has revealed a trove of historical treasures. Among the uncovered relics are a travertine wall, the foundational remains of a colonnaded portico, and a garden. A lead water pipe, bearing the owner’s name and presumed to be linked to the garden, has also been found. This evidence strongly suggests that the garden was once owned by Caligula, the notorious Roman Emperor who ruled from 37 to 41 AD.

Caligula’s reign, though brief, is often remembered for its extravagance and alleged tyrannical behavior. Despite his controversial legacy, this discovery adds a layer of intrigue to his story, connecting modern Rome with its ancient past in a tangible way.

Further excavations have also uncovered a series of figurative terracottas, once used to adorn roofs with unique mythological scenes. These artifacts were repurposed as sewer covers but originally likely adorned structures within the garden, giving a glimpse into the opulence that characterized the imperial lifestyle.

This archaeological breakthrough not only enriches our understanding of Rome’s historical landscape but also enhances the allure of the city’s iconic sites, making it a perfect addition to any travel enthusiast’s itinerary.
