[Latest Travel News] Whether making last-minute purchases or looking for limited-edition products, duty-free shopping is something you can look forward to when traveling. Aside from the exemption from local taxes and duties, you can also access a wide range of products and good deals.
Now, if you’re going to Thailand anytime soon, here’s the news: duty-free shops in the arrival areas of Thailand’s major airports will soon close down. The Thai government hasn’t announced a specific date for the end of operations yet, but as reported by the Bangkok Post, operators managing duty-free businesses have already agreed to suspend operations.
The reason? The government wants to encourage travelers to spend more within the country to help boost the local economy.
Airports affected by this decision
Duty-free shopping will end in international airports Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, as well as in airports located in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, U-Tapao (Rayong, Samui, and Krabi.
Thailand hopes to improve its tourism strategy
Encouraging travelers to redirect spending and purchase local goods is another way of improving the country’s tourism strategy. This year, Thailand is pushing to welcome around 40 million foreign visitors, which will help generate revenue for the country.
To boost tourism, Thailand has halted a proposal imposing a tourism fee on international tourists arriving by air while extending its free insurance scheme until the end of 2024.
The number of countries eligible for visa-free entry into Thailand increased from 57 to 93 this year. To manage the number of passengers entering the country, Thailand is also considering decongesting its airports and upgrading its facilities. The country is also aiming to rank Suvarnabhumi Airport among the world’s top 50 airports by 2025.
