Istanbul, Turkey— The Galata Tower has officially reopened to the public following an extensive restoration effort that began in November 2023. The beloved landmark, known for its stunning panoramic views of the city, welcomed visitors back on May 25.

The eighth floor of the tower was initially closed to the public, and on February 23, the entire structure was shut down for comprehensive restoration. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism emphasized the use of modern technology and expert supervision to maintain the tower’s aesthetic and historical significance.

Additional measures were taken to support the migratory swift birds that nest in the tower, highlighting the project’s commitment to preserving both cultural heritage and local wildlife.

The project included the careful reinstallation of the tower’s 270-kilogram copper pinnacle. It was complemented by georadar studies to assess the tower’s walls and foundations, ensuring its long-term stability.

A symbol of resilience

The Galata Tower, a symbol of Istanbul’s rich heritage, dates back to the Byzantine era, with its construction completed in 1348. It was originally built to surveil and defend Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) and the surrounding areas, including the strategic waterway of the Golden Horn.

The tower has withstood numerous earthquakes and undergone several restorations, underscoring its resilience and historical significance.

Visitors can admire the tower’s impressive cylindrical base and Genoese design from the outside, appreciating the craftsmanship that has kept it standing for centuries.

One of the highlights of the Galata Tower is its observation deck. From here, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Istanbul, capturing the sprawling cityscape, the Bosphorus, and the historic Golden Horn.

New visitor guidelines

Admission is regulated, with a maximum of 100 individuals allowed per hour to manage crowds and preserve the tower’s condition.
