Cycling enthusiasts and travelers are in for a treat with the opening of the Trans Dinarica Route, a remarkable cycling trail that spans eight countries in the Western Balkans: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia. Developed by GoodTrail and supported by USAID’s Economic Development, Governance, and Enterprise Growth (EDGE) Project and GIZ’s Sustainable Rural Development in Albania, this ambitious project has been in the works for over two years.
Promoting sustainable travel
The Trans Dinarica Route covers an impressive 5,480 kilometers, weaving through stunning national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites. To enhance the cycling experience, travelers are encouraged to register for the RWGPS Navigation Pack, which includes the RWGPS App, GPS tracks, suggested day-to-day itineraries, and essential information to make navigation easier and more enjoyable.
The route is designed to promote sustainable travel, deliberately bypassing major cities to spread tourism benefits to rural and overlooked communities. Journalist Alex Crevar shared via Time Out that ‘it is for cyclists to discover parts of the Balkans that weren’t on their radar before.’ The trail offers a physical challenge and an opportunity to immerse oneself in the region’s rich cultural tapestry.
The Balkans offer stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant traditions that often go unnoticed by the mainstream tourist crowd.
